Digital-asset risks

Digital assets are highly risky. You can lose all of the money you put into them. The main risks include:

• Volatility: prices can rise and fall sharply and quickly, at any hour.
• Liquidity: it may be hard or costly to sell, especially when markets are under stress.
• Custody and private keys: assets can be lost for good if keys are lost, stolen or mishandled.
• Exchanges and counterparties: trading venues, custodians and other providers can fail, freeze withdrawals or be hacked.
• Smart contracts and protocols: code can contain errors, and protocols can change or stop working.
• Forks and network changes: a network can split or change its rules, with uncertain effects on holders.
• Stablecoins: a stablecoin can lose its peg, and holding one is not the same as holding cash in a bank.
• Valuation: prices can differ across venues, and some assets have no reliable price.
• Regulation: laws differ by country and are still changing. New rules can restrict or end certain activities.
• Cyber attacks and fraud: systems and people can be targeted by criminals.
• Correlation: digital assets can fall at the same time as other markets, so holding them may not spread risk when it is needed most.
• Concentration: a large holding in one asset, or reliance on one provider, can decide the whole outcome.
• Past data: digital assets have a short history. Past volatility and past falls may understate what can happen.
• Limits and rebalancing: in a stressed market it may not be possible to reduce a holding at the quoted price, or at all.
